The Online News Association is thrilled to announce two appointments to the 2024-25 Board of Directors: Lauren Williams, CEO and Co-founder of Capital B, and Angela Pacienza, Executive Editor at The Globe and Mail.
Lauren Williams leads a nonprofit news team on a mission to serve the needs and experiences of Black audiences. Lauren started her media career as a local reporter in Newport News, Virginia, and has since served in editorial and operations leadership roles at Vox.com, Mother Jones and The Root, among other outlets.
Angela Pacienza joined the ONA board in 2022 and has been appointed by her peers to serve a second two-year term. At The Globe and Mail, Angela is responsible for the print and digital editorial strategy. She previously led The Globe’s culture change and staff development initiatives and continues to focus on efforts to advance and retain women at the management level in newsrooms.
Lauren and Angela will begin a two-year term on Jan. 1, 2024, along with six board members who were (re)elected by ONA members in September: Ethar El-Katatney, News Product Strategy Lead for the Americas at Bloomberg; Ryan Kellett, Vice President, Audience, at Axios Media; Charo Henríquez, Editor, Newsroom Development & Support, at The New York Times; Versha Sharma, Editor-in-Chief for Teen Vogue; Graham Watson-Ringo, Senior Director of Member Strategy for News Revenue Hub, and Elana Zak, Newsletter Strategy Director at The Washington Post.
The ONA board includes 15 voting members who guide the association’s strategic direction following BoardSource’s Ten Essential Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards. Board seats are filled through an annual election process and by select appointments to meet needs identified by the current board. The election process spans about three months, with nominations opening in July/August, and active ONA members are eligible to participate — by nominating fellow members, submitting their own candidacy and/or voting.
