Case Study: New Breed of Journalism Watchdogs, Blending GenAI, History, and a “Writing Coach” Approach

Journalism Watchdogs is the web tool that University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa professor Dr. Brett Oppegaard wanted for his classrooms and newsrooms. He couldn’t find anything like it, so he built it, with a Journalism ‘Dog theme and the abilities to boost journalistic work through various online editing support systems. Using a Large Language Model tapped into a GenAI-powered interface, these ‘Dogs show off their writing-coach specialities as a way to increase the speed, efficiency, and effectiveness of any journalist, student or otherwise.

Speaker:

Brett Oppegaard, Ph.D researches media-production processes and products at intersections of Journalism, Artificial Intelligence, Technical Communication, Rhetoric, Human-Computer Interaction, and Disability Studies. He primarily studies those interests within mobile contexts, including creating novel research tools through interactive mobile media, mobile apps, and mobile technologies. The U.S. National Park Service, the U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities, the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts, and Google, among others, have supported his research projects, and those research efforts have been recognized internationally by various organizations, including the European Heritage Association, the American Alliance of Museums, and the American Council of the Blind.
