This is a followup to our August 2024 training session on basic AI tools for data journalists. ONA members can watch the recording and other 2024 AI training sessions. You don’t need to have attended the previous session in order to attend this training, but familiarity with the basics of data journalism practices will help.
In this session, we’ll cover more data tools that allow you to chat with PDFs, analyze data (Data Analyst, Julius and others). We also will cover some summarization tools and data cleaning tools. We also will work outside of AI with some data scraping spreadsheet formulas and tools that will scrape PDFs. Participants get a handout with links to all the tools and some practice exercises.
Make sure you have accounts set up for Julius.ai and Data Analyst custom GPT. You need ChatGPT Plus ($20 a month) to use Data Analyst.
Registration
Anyone is welcome to attend. Tickets are $25 or free for ONA members. Check your membership status or learn more about the benefits of joining ONA.
Where will the meetup take place?
This event will be hosted on Zoom. For this particular event, you’ll have the best experience if you join via the Zoom app on a desktop or laptop computer so that you can see the presentation on a larger screen. You can also join using the mobile app, although the presentation may be harder to view.
Can I dial in by phone?
We recommend joining from your computer, tablet or phone using the Zoom app. You won’t be able to access the presentation slides, chat and exercises if you’re dialed in via phone only. If you’re unfamiliar with Zoom, we’ll have staff on hand to troubleshoot, and we also suggest checking out the Zoom support site for more help.
Will this event be recorded?
Yes, this event will be recorded. We will send the recording to anyone registered after the event, regardless of whether they attended live.
Will closed captioning be available?
Yes, we will enable Zoom’s closed captioning tool, which now supports closed captioning in both the main room and breakout rooms.
