Introducing ONA’s Impact Award

We are delighted to introduce a new distinction to the Online Journalism Awards, the Online News Association’s annual showcase of the best work in digital journalism. The Impact Award recognizes a trailblazing individual whose work in digital journalism and dedication to innovation exhibits substantial impact on the industry. Over the years, ONA has recognized that it needs to honor individuals whose work has made an impact on the industry regardless of their tenure in journalism or involvement with the organization. We are excited to announce the inaugural recipient of the Impact Award, selected by the Board of Directors, on Friday, Oct. 15. Learn more

Establishing meaningful values for journalism organizations

We are excited to kick off the ONA Insights conference (Oct. 14–15) with a featured session about our individual and collective values. Join us on site in Philadelphia or remotely Oct. 14, 10 a.m. EDT (14:00 UTC) for a special edition of the “Belonging in the News” series we’ve organized with Vision 25 collaborators. Ashley Alvarado, Vice President of Community Engagement and Strategic Initiatives at Southern California Public Radio, and Martin G. Reynolds, Co-Executive Director of Maynard Institute, will build on a SRCCON conversation about replacing objectivity with actual values to explore how organizations can dive into the deep work of defining values. Attendees will leave the discussion with an understanding that aligning our values with our work not only leads to better journalism but also helps build institutions of belonging in the industry.

Featured sessions at ONA Insights are broader conversations tackling pressing issues for digital journalists, and workshops and breakout sessions throughout the rest of the day build on the themes discussed. Each featured session is pre-recorded and aired online, which means it will be available to all attendees at the scheduled time regardless of the type of pass you hold. If you’re participating in person in Philadelphia, you can choose to watch the morning featured session on your own from your hotel room or home, or join a watch party and facilitated discussion in Wyeth Gallery A&B at the Sonesta Hotel. Register now for ONA Insights.

Please note: We’re requiring all participants in Philadelphia to provide proof of vaccination against Covid-19 and to wear face masks indoors. Review the FAQs on our safety measures and reach out with any questions any time by emailing support@journalists.org.

Watch now: ONA Board candidates share their visions

On Oct. 4, we heard 11 candidates running in the 2022-23 ONA Board of Directors Election tell us who they are, what their vision is for digital journalism and how they plan to serve the ONA community as board members. ONA members: We encourage you to listen to their talks — and vote now through Oct. 18.

Veteran journalist Meredith Artley wins the Rich Jaroslovsky Founder Award

Through her leadership and commitment to ONA, Meredith Artley, Senior Vice President and Editor-in-chief of CNN Digital Worldwide, has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Rich Jaroslovsky Founder Award. Serving ONA as President (2015-2016) and Vice President (2013-2014), Meredith led the organization to execute a three-year strategic plan and change in executive leadership.
