Celebrate the holidays with ONA Local

‘Tis the season to eat, drink and be merry! We’ve rounded up all the ONA Local holiday parties happening in various cities to help you find a place to celebrate with your journalism peers. Be sure to sign up for updates from a group near you to get notifications about future events.

Strategies for Instagram Stories

Level-up your Instagram strategy with advice shared in the ONA19 session How Instagram Stories Helped Us to Double Traffic and Engage Audience (one of the most popular of the conference!). The session covered new tools that can help you stand out on the platform, pitfalls to avoid and formulas to boost engagement — led by Franak Viačorka, digital media strategist for the U.S. Agency for Global Media and vice president of the Digital Communication Network.

Pitches get stuff done

ONA Chief Strategic Partnerships Officer Jessica Strelitz delivered an Ignite Talk at Newsgeist last week, focusing on how the pitching skills we learn as journalists can translate into sales. If you weren’t there, you can watch the video and pick up handy insights into relationship-building — such as listening to recordings of your voice, keeping your promises and getting help from colleagues.

From the archives

We are sharing resources and stories from the ONA archives throughout 2019, as we celebrate 20 years of inspiring innovation and excellence in digital journalism.

As you head into holiday party season, it may be helpful to revisit Irving Washington’s guide for introverts and Samantha Ragland’s companion guide for extroverts for big-group events. Though they’re written to help attendees navigate our annual conference, the lessons included are relevant to any social scenario — like finding the connectors in the room and being sure you listen thoughtfully.
