Our five focus areas

While celebrating 20 years of ONA, we have taken a close look at who we are, what we have accomplished and how we can best serve the digital journalism community. Through this process we identified five focus areas that will guide our work and mission in the next 20 years:

  • Developing strategies for emerging technologies
  • Sharing best practices on audience engagement and metrics
  • Innovative news storytelling
  • Experimenting and finding new revenue and business models
  • Cultivating newsroom leadership, culture and diversity

Learn more about our focus areas and hear from ONA leaders Irving Washington and Mandy Jenkins on how we are thinking about the years ahead.

From the archives: Taking sketchnotes at ONA17

We are sharing resources and stories from the ONA archives throughout 2019, as we celebrate 20 years of inspiring innovation and excellence in digital journalism.

Studying our ONA19 notes is reminding us of one particular note-taker at ONA17: Ayumi Fukuda Bennet challenged herself to create sketchnotes of the sessions she attended — drawing cartoons along with memorable quotes and thoughts. “I think there’s value in being able to visualize your ideas,” she told the Student Newsroom at the time. Watch this video of her create the rapid-fire illustrations.

Impact of ONA: I met @Sarah_Hoye in my first ONA when I was still in grad school. She’s become my mentor, a great friend, the voice to keep me sane and a badass I always look up to. #Happy20thONA — Shako Liu
Memories: Working on @ONA Conference Committees, running the student newsroom in DC, making meaningful connections, volunteering, attempting diversity relations EARLY on, watching it grow, loving this organization. #Happy20thONA #ONA19 — Sybril Bennet
