Community and career paths for newsroom coders

We recently caught up with inaugural ONA Community Award recipient Erika Owens about her work supporting communities of developers, designers and journalists. The ONA Community Award honors an individual or small team working behind the scenes to create tools or work environments that allow digital journalists to do their best work. Read the interview for Erika’s insights about careers at the intersection of journalism technology, why community is so important and the challenges she’s working to solve in her role as Director of OpenNews. Nominations for the 2019 ONA Community Award are open through July 24.

Countdown to the Journalism 360 Unconference

New York City: Join us July 23 for inspiring talks and demos at the Journalism 360 Unconference, generously hosted by the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism at Columbia University.

Jamie Pallot, co-founder of Emblematic, and Marcelle Hopkins, Co-director, Immersive Journalism at The New York Times, will kick off the day by sharing insights on the state of immersive journalism. Shazna Nessa, Deputy Managing Editor, Global Head of Visuals at the Wall Street Journal, will moderate the conversation. You’ll have a chance to share your ideas and connect with others in the industry. Plus, explore projects by the 2018 Journalism 360 Challenge winners, including augmented reality coverage of Apollo 11’s 50th anniversary by NYC Media Lab and AP Health & Science; an interdimensional audio editor by Datavized; and Electronic Frontier Foundation‘s virtual reality experience Spot the Surveillance. From the archives: Your turn!

Since January, we’ve shared resources and stories from the ONA archives in this newsletter as part of our yearlong celebration of ONA’s 20th anniversary. Now it’s your turn! Help us to mark this milestone by connecting with peers at upcoming ONA Local community events (rumor has it there is cake!) — you can share your favorite ONA memories and photos, show off the T-shirt from your first conference and join the conversation on #Happy20thONA.
