ONA Weekly #242

Welcome, Bill Brady!

We are thrilled to introduce ONA’s newest staff member: Bill Brady! Bill joins ONA as the Strategic Partnerships Coordinator. He brings valuable experience in business development and sponsorships for both large conventions and smaller conferences, including with InfoComm and the National Association of Broadcasters. In his new role, he will support ONA’s business development strategy, from managing exhibit spaces at our events to developing new opportunities for our partners to connect with the ONA community.

Deadline to start an ONA Local group

Apply by Feb. 1 to start an ONA Local group where you live. ONA Local is a global network of volunteer-run groups hosting training and networking events for digital journalism communities. Organizers join a leadership development program as a cohort of community builders. They receive a toolkit of resources for launching and nurturing a Local group, and work with ONA to build the skills needed to lead innovation in local journalism.

Join ONA on Slack

The ONA community on Slack is a great place to connect with ONA Local organizers, ask for resources to support your work or just say hello to fellow digital journalists. Request an invitation to join.

From the archives: Future-think with Amy Webb

We are sharing resources from the ONA archives throughout 2019, as we celebrate 20 years of inspiring innovation in journalism.

Year after year Amy Webb’s Tech Trends for Journalists is the most popular sessions at ONA’s annual conference. In each talk, Amy delivers rapid-fire highlights of the technology that will have the biggest impact on journalism in the coming year. Back in 2012, her predictions included the emergence of verification tools, wearable technology and new ways to distribute video — but she also changed things up by sharing her strategy for identifying trends. Tune in to learn about the five attributes of innovation and how to use this framework to evaluate whether an idea is the next big thing.
