ONA makes first home at new NPR headquarters

ONA has grown in membership, size and influence over the past 13 years. And through it all, our small but mighty staff has embodied the digital ethos — working virtually, allowing our nonprofit association to stay lean, agile and cost-efficient. Now that we’re a staff of six working on three websites, a growing annual conference, up to 40 ONA Local groups and a range of projects to support journalists and journalism, we came to the inevitable conclusion: We need a home.

So we’re delighted to announce our first true office — a no-cost dedicated space in NPR’s new headquarters in downtown Washington D.C. The state-of-the-art building, a “green,” all-digital space at 1111 N. Capitol Street NE that houses NPR’s 800 D.C.-based employees, will surround ONA staff in a creative environment that we’re confident will generate innovative ideas to move journalism forward.

Our official move-in date is July 1, but we’ll be busy moving files from our respective garages and closets and setting up camp, so our mailing address won’t change for a few weeks. If you’re a member, supporter, donor, vendor or friend, you’ll be getting an update from us with our new address and contact info shortly.

We owe deep appreciation to NPR’s President and CEO Gary Knell and EVP and Chief Content Officer Kinsey Wilson, a long-time ONA friend, for their generosity in helping a nonprofit journalism organization find an ideal place to land, and to everyone at NPR who has helped us with logistics.

We also extend a warm thanks to Dow Lohnes, home of our general counsel Jon Hart, which has offered us free meeting space for the past five years; to our founders and Board of Directors, present and past, who had the vision and confidence in our mission to steer us to this milestone moment; and to our members and the digital journalism community, who inspire us each and every day to do better, and to look ahead.
