ONA Weekly #514: Bring Your AI Questions To Nikita Roy

By on May 29, 2024

Register by June 13 for Early Bird passes to the 2024 Online News Association Conference (ONA24). It’s the most affordable way to access the conference and join us to celebrate 25 years of connecting the leading thinkers and innovators in digital journalism. We’re also looking for volunteers to help us deliver a great experience. If interested, apply by May 30.

Bring your AI questions to Nikita Roy

Don’t miss this one! On Tuesday, June 4, we’re excited to gather for a Q&A session about all your newsroom AI questions with none other than Nikita Roy — journalist, data scientist, AI futurist and host of the podcast Newsroom Robots. This lively conversation will be recorded and aired as a podcast episode. Register now and bring your questions, big or small, about working with AI in journalism.

U.S. Election Safety Summer

The 2024 U.S. general election comes at a critical time for press freedom in the United States. In response to intensifying hostilities, abuse and violence towards journalists, ONA is supporting PEN America, the Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Women’s Media Foundation with the launch of U.S. Election Safety Summer. This free webinar series offers concrete strategies and resources for journalists to protect themselves and one another. Over six sessions, the series will provide safety guidance on risk assessment, physical safety, digital safety and online abuse defense, legal rights and psychological well-being.

The first session is on Tuesday, June 4. Register now to learn with Nadine Hoffman, IWMF Deputy Executive Director; Jeje Mohamed, IWMF Senior Manager for Digital Safety and Free Expression; and Jen Byers, visual and investigative journalist specializing in coverage on U.S. domestic conflict, activism, LGBTQ+ issues, climate, and state repression and dissent.

Two applications due tomorrow, May 30

Friendly reminder: There are two opportunities closing Thursday, May 30, 11:59 p.m. EDT, that come with a complimentary badge to attend ONA24.
  • Event Volunteer: Conference volunteers contribute eight-hour shifts to support pre-conference prep, registration desk, special events, etc. and receive complimentary registration.
  • HBCU Digital Media Fellowship: This is an expenses-paid trip for students to build digital skills and experience the conference in Atlanta.
