Learn about preventing misinformation and building audience trust during a participatory conversation
Journalists today face disinformation and misinformation challenges as well as the simultaneous eroding of public trust in institutions. They are combating overt tactics to share incorrect information and deploying strategies to prevent the spread of misinformation. As journalists’ efforts continue, we’ll discuss how to be resilient in the face of these challenges in this participatory virtual event.
ONA’s goal is to bring a fresh perspective to a daunting challenge: for news to continue serving as a place to find clear and straightforward information in a tumultuous online environment saturated with misinformation and disinformation.
Meena Thiruvengadam, Digital Strategy Consultant and journalist, will moderate this discussion. Speakers include:
- Joy Mayer, Director of Trusting News, to discuss building a more trusting relationship with your audience
- Dr. Norbert Schwarz, Provost Professor, Department of Psychology & Marshall School of Business and Co-director, USC Dornsife Mind & Society Center, who will speak about his research on inadvertent amplification, and opportunities for newsrooms to help prevent misinformation from taking root for planned news events
- Gabriella Stern, Director of Media Relations at the World Health Organization, to discuss what we’ve learned from the spread of misinformation in a public health context and how journalists can think strategies moving forward
We’ll begin the event with a 20-minute panel discussion; this portion will be recorded for on-demand viewing after the event. Then, attendees will join one of three breakout rooms for a 40-minute participatory conversation with any speaker of their choice.
This event is free to attendees thanks to funding from 3M.
Where will the meetup take place?
This event will be hosted on Zoom. For this participatory event, you’ll have the best experience if you join via the Zoom app on a desktop or laptop computer so that you can see more participants in the gallery view. You can also join using the mobile app, although the number of participants you can see at one time may be more limited.
Can I dial in by phone?
We don’t recommend joining by phone dial-in only, so you can see all the breakout room options and contribute to the conversation more easily. If you’re unfamiliar with Zoom, we’ll have staff on hand to troubleshoot, and we also suggest checking out the Zoom support site for more help.
Do I have to be an ONA member to attend this meetup?
This event is open to all, and there’s no membership requirement. Please feel free to share with others in your network, too.
Will closed captioning be available?
We will make closed captioning available. Please let us know at registration if this would help you participate so that we can ensure it’s available in breakout rooms as well.
