ONA STL: Food52’s Co-Founder Amanda Hesser: Turning a journalism dream into a reality

Do you have a side project/journalism dream that you’ve been mulling over but haven’t quite brought to life yet? Join us on June 8 for inspiring discussion with Food52 founder Amanda Hesser about turning dream projects into realities. 

Hesser, the co-founder and CEO of Food52, who will be joining us via Skype all the way from Brooklyn, New York. She will be speaking about food, writing and entrepreneurship. 

Hesser left a dream gig as a food editor at the New York Times in 2008 to start Food52, an online food community (and e-commerce website) that broke the mold on what a food website could be. 

As always have free beer, soda, pizza and some dedicated time to let you get to know one another. Everyone is welcome from developers, reporters, students, educators, editors and all those in-between.

Here’s just a little bit about Amanda:

Amanda Hesser is CEO of the website Food52, which she co-founded with Merrill Stubbs in 2009. Food52 was named Publication of the Year by the James Beard Foundation in 2012 and best culinary Website by the International Association of Culinary Professionals the last three years. From 1997 to 2008, she was a reporter and food editor at The New York Times. Hesser is the author of Cooking for Mr. Latte: A Food Lover’s Courtship, with Recipes and The Cook and the Gardener and the co-author of two Food52 cookbooks. Her The Essential New York Times Cookbook was a New York Times Bestseller, and her most recent book, written with Stubbs, is “A New Way to Dinner.” Hesser has been named one of the 50 most influential women in food by Gourmet, played herself in the Nora Ephron film, Julie & Julia, created the Twitter app, Plodt, and served on President Obama’s Commission on White House Fellowships.

Here’s a rundown of the evening:

5:30 – 6:00: Get settled, relax, grab some pizza, some drinks and mingle.

6:00 – 6:30 p.m.: Listen to an inspiring talk from Amanda Hesser of Food52. She will be doing a short Q&A at the very end of her chat. 

6:30 – 6:45 p.m.: Lightning talks. What’s your side project/side hustle/journalism dream? We want to hear what you’re working on (or at least dreaming about). We’d also love to hear about any neat projects that you’ve been working on in your day job. Keep it light, fun and you don’t need any slides in this 3-5 minute informal chat.
