ONA Seattle: Expert tips for building an award winning newsletter

An ONA Local event, hosted by ONA Seattle

• What we’ll do
Email newsletters are an increasingly important tool for journalists, but what’s the secret to meaningful engagement and content that converts readers to supporters?

Our speaker, Lisa Williams, developed The Magic Pill, an award winning “audio newsletter” which won the Edward J. Murrow Award for Excellence in Innovation. The Magic Pill was the first audio newsletter of its kind and tested an innovative way of raising money for public radio stations, one that increased the listener-to-donor ratio 7X!

In this workshop, you’ll see examples of best practices from the field, learn an approach to starting new newsletters that succeed and explore how to retool existing newsletters for better performance.

Join us in the recently opened Hive Media Lab for expert tips on how to reach audiences in new ways. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and light appetizers will be provided before the talk begins at 6 p.m. RSVP on Eventbrite (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/expert-tips-for-building-an-award-winning-newsletter-tickets-43204891995?aff=Meetup)

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Lisa Williams is an award winning technologist with a long history of media innovation. Lisa has run startups, been an MIT Media Lab fellow, developed and taught a popular data visualization course for changemakers, worked at NPR affiliates, The Boston Globe/Boston.com and worked with dozens of organizations looking to create greater community engagement online and offline.

ABOUT THE NEWSLETTER

In September 2017, Lisa developed The Magic Pill, an ‘audio newsletter’ which won the Edward J. Murrow Award for Excellence in Innovation. The Magic Pill was a departure from the usual podcast routine — it is a podcast that is also a 21 day exercise challenge. Fast, music-driven, and fun, everyone who subscribed could get their own day 1 and design their own challenge. The Magic Pill was delivered daily to a user’s inbox via email; no podcast-client setup hassles required. It was the first “audio newsletter” of its kind.
