Pay in the news business is notoriously … not great. But what can journalists and those hiring them do about it?
Reporters, managers, students and the like are invited to join ONA Philly for an open but guided off-the-record discussion about knowing your worth (literally and figuratively) during salary negotiations and beyond.
A few prompts we might discuss, from the philosophical to the tactical:
– How do you value yourself in this profession? How does that differ from how your employer values you?
– What are the strategies and vocabulary you need to have better salary negotiations?
– How do different news orgs determine how much they’re able to pay? (Attendees will be encouraged to share specific numbers if comfortable.)
– What’s a “normal” salary for a journalist in Philadelphia?
This is the first in a series of occasional discussions about getting paid in the journalism world, to be called Money Talks.
The event will be held at the oldest continuously operating press club in America, the Pen & Pencil Club. Don’t forget to tip your bartender!
