ONA New York City: How to Create a Successful Facebook Group

An ONA Local event, hosted by ONA NYC

Want to talk to your readers about politics? Or looking for a good movie recommendation? Odds are, there’s a Facebook group for that.

Facebook groups are one of the oldest features of the world’s biggest social network. But recently, Mark Zuckerberg has shown new interest in this product, proving what we journalists knew all along: Facebook Groups are an important tool for reaching readers and building community.

The panelists will give a series of short lightning talks about how they’re using Facebook Groups to build community. We’ll hear what’s worked and what hasn’t based on practical examples. You’ll leave knowing how to start a group and what to consider beforehand.

You’ll hear from:

Lainna Fader and Saira Khan, The New Yorker, The New Yorker Movie Club

Diane Jeanty, WNYC, We The Commuters Facebook group

Aryn Braun, The Economist, Democracy in America

Michael Gold and Samantha Henig, New York Times, The New York Times Podcast Club

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Please note your ticket to this event is non-refundable and non-transferable. You must use your full name in your Meetup profile in order to ensure entry.

There’ll be plenty of food and drinks, courtesy of our sponsor Fusion Media Group, home of Gizmodo, Splinter, Jezebel, Deadspin, The Onion, The Root, and more. They’re a great place to work and currently hiring ‒ check it out!
