ONA LA: Mobile Storytelling for Beginners (Workshop/Panel)

An ONA Local event, hosted by ONA LA

Learn tricks and tips for telling stories on mobile apps – join the LA Press Club, Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS SoCal) and the Online News Association (ONA LA) for this special program.

WORKSHOP

This beginner’s workshop will have attendees out and about and shooting with apps such as Anchor, Instagram, Periscope, Snapchat and Vine. It’s a great opportunity for those who have never used these apps before to learn the basics. Social media leads will give some tips/instructions and examples to start off, then offer an ‘assignment’ to the group that will allow you to use some of the different basic features of the app. During the activity, we’ll provide advice and answer questions, genius-bar style.

We request that attendees come with their phones charged and have signed up with an account on the app they want to try out. When RSVPing, be sure to note down the app you want to learn – attendees are limited to one app during the workshop portion.

Social media leads:

Anchor (shareable audio) – Laura Davis, USC Annenberg Media Center digital news director and assistant professor of professional practice

Instagram (photo) – Tiffany Tse, freelance photographer

Periscope (live streaming) – Angela Kim, social at Yahoo

Snapchat (visual storytelling) – Saba Hamedy, reporter at Mashable

Vine (video) – Christina Cocca, homepage and news curation editor at BuzzFeed

PANEL

The panel will be an opportunity to review what was discussed in the small groups and also address some questions.
