Join ONA Detroit, the Detroit Free Press and the Freedom of the Press Foundation for a conversation about digital security for journalists.
In tandem with development of new technologies comes a flourishing of possibilities for journalistic investigation and connections to readers and potential sources on a global scale. At the same time, as we welcome technology into newsrooms and journalistic workflows, journalists are exposed to new threats to their security and the safety of their sources in the field.
A key component in harnessing the positive potential of technology, all while remaining vigilant against its potential dangers, is in understanding the fundamental aspects of digital security. This one-hour session, led by Olivia Martin of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, will introduce the fundamentals:
1. How to evaluate the risk to your data in-context.
2. How to protect your accounts, and the data behind them.
3. Tools and tips for secure browsing and communication.

About Olivia Martin: A graduate of NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, Olivia has focused her professional work on researching and workshopping countermeasures to digital threats faced by journalists, activists and media makers. At FPF, she works with a team of trainers to provide direct support to journalists through newsroom trainings, individual consultations and technical writing.
The Freedom of the Press Foundation is a U.S.-based non-profit organization that protects, defends, and empowers public-interest journalism in the 21st century. The organization works to preserve and strengthen First and Fourth Amendment rights guaranteed to the press through a variety of avenues, including the development of encryption tools, documentation of attacks on the press, training newsrooms on digital security practices, and advocating for the public’s right to know.
