ONA Dallas/Ft. Worth: Social hour & discussion: Engaging diverse communities through journalism

An ONA Local event, hosted by ONA DFW

Join our chapter at The Wild Detectives for a social hour and discussion about using journalism to support diverse communities.

We’re so excited to be hosting this discussion about diversity along with other ONA Local chapters around the country.

Programming:

We will be discussing two local engagement projects, the Hispanic Families Network and Questions of Color, both of which focus on promoting public service journalism in diverse communities.

The Hispanic Families Network is a joint project between The Dallas Morning News, Al Día and Southern Methodist University that trains parents to use journalistic techniques to find spread information about early childhood education and literacy.

Questions of Color began as a Dallas Morning News video project inviting community members to have a conversation with journalists about race. Through a partnership with the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture it grew into a free community event. Now, the discussion is continuing digitally in a Facebook group.

Organizers of both will share how they started, what it took to organize and what they’ve learned from the projects.

We’ll be sipping on coffee, tea, wine or beer and enjoying the (hopefully) magical Texas weather in The Wild Detective’s backyard. If you haven’t been to the shop before, there great books for sale there including a robust selection Spanish-language offerings.

Hope to see you there!
