Run for the ONA Board of Directors

We are looking for inspiring journalism leaders to join the 2025-26 Board of Directors. Serving on the board is a unique opportunity to help guide ONA’s strategic direction, shape the future of digital journalism and build a stronger industry. To be considered, an ONA member must be nominated by another ONA member by Wednesday, Aug. 28.

How to declare your candidacy:

  1. Ensure you are an ONA member in good standing.
  2. Review the nominee criteria and responsibilities required of board members, and have an understanding of ONA’s mission.
  3. Ask another ONA member to nominate you using the nomination form.
  4. Complete the candidate form

ONA members active as of Monday, Sept. 9, will be eligible to cast ballots in this year’s election. Learn more about the election process and timeline.

Join Democracy Day 2024, get free ONA memberships

U.S. Democracy Day is partnering with ONA to drive new participation in this year’s nationwide collaboration. The next 25 newsrooms that sign up to participate in Democracy Day between now and Sept. 6 will receive two complimentary ONA memberships for journalists in their organization.

Participating in Democracy Day is easy: We ask that your news organization commit to producing at least one story or piece of content (but we encourage more!) from the Democracy Day content menu on or around Sept. 15, outside of a paywall if you have one. The content menu includes coverage ideas around elections, free speech, civic engagement, newsroom transparency and more. Sign up today to be part of Democracy Day 2024.

Using AI in video journalism

We’re excited to share a couple of new learning and practice opportunities on good practices for AI in video journalism. Join us for a one-hour training on Monday, Aug. 19, with documentary film and commercial producer Basil Shadid. Then follow it up Thursday, Aug. 22, with a 30-minute Mini Lab session on Leveraging AI for Video Research Synthesis and Pitch Creation, led by Alex Clark, adjunct professor of journalism at Columbia University and producer covering AI and misinformation for CBS News.

Plus, ICYMI: The AI in Journalism Initiative is expanding. Read about the upcoming pilot of AI workshops for local newsrooms; sessions for practical learning, networking and strategy during ONA24; and even more virtual and in-person training opportunities in late 2024 into next year.
