ONA Weekly #479: Calling For Equity In Journalism Funding

Calling for equity in journalism funding

ONA has joined six other journalism organizations to ask the funders of the $500 million+ Press Forward initiative to be inclusive, intentional and transparent with how they distribute resources.

“We think it’s important to remember just what is ‘local news’ and who are the people who have long been providing it. … Our organizations have come together to advocate on behalf of Asian, Black, Hispanic, Indigenous and other people of color who have historically been neglected, misrepresented or tokenized. Engaging our people and our communities in Press Forward will be vital to its success and credibility.” Read the full letter to Press Forward’s leadership.

Speakers Paul Cheung, Matt Masterson, Liz Danzico and Dalia Hashim sit on stage at ONA23. How has it been one month since we gathered in Philadelphia? We’re feeling nostalgic already. Check out some photo highlights from our time together at the in-person component of ONA23 and the Online Journalism Awards.

Plus, don’t forget ONA23 continues online Sept. 28-29 — invite your colleagues to register for a virtual-only pass to Onward and set a calendar reminder now for 10:50 a.m. EDT/14:50 UTC.
