Equitable coverage for Black America
Understanding and engaging with Black America is fundamental to the practice of good journalism in the United States. From COVID-19 to police violence, most major news stories in the U.S. in 2020 have disproportionately affected Black people. Yet, Black communities are too often viewed as an audience segment, or worse, a coverage subject.
Join us for the ONA20 opening featured session More Equitable Coverage for Black America on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 12:15 p.m. ET (16:15 UTC). Founders and editors of digital-first publications whose coverage proportionally centers on Black communities will lead the conversation and share how they’re approaching their reporting leading into the U.S. elections and beyond:
- Todd Johnson, Chief Content Officer, theGrio
- Patrice Peck, Freelance Journalist, Coronavirus News for Black Folks
- Glenn Burkins, Founder and Publisher, Qcitymetro.com
- Wendi Thomas, Editor and Publisher, MLK50: Justice Through Journalism
- Tiffany Walden, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief, The TRiiBE
