Advancing diversity in journalism

In this ONA on Air episode, host and producer Erika Aguilar speaks with Michael Grant, lead mentor of ONA’s HBCU Digital Media Fellowship about the projects and tools he’s developing to improve diversity in newsrooms. Leah Proctor-Ford, one of five students selected for the 2018 fellowship, reports perspectives from ONA18 attendees about the divide between the business and editorial sides of journalism organizations.

We announced the winners of the 2018 Online Journalism Awards on Sept. 15 in a ceremony emceed by Niala Boodhoo, host of NPR Illinois’ The 21st. The Trace and Postdata.club tied to win the new Micro newsroom category for the General Excellence award, while Verificado 2018 won the award for Excellence in Collaboration and Partnerships, also new this year. 

We also honored photojournalist Nicole Tung as the 2018 recipient of the James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting; former ONA Executive Director Jane McDonnell with the Rich Jaroslovsky Founder Award; and OpenNews Director Erika Owens as the first recipient of the new ONA Community Award. Explore all the finalists and winners to find inspiration for your next big project.
