New categories for the Online Journalism Awards

Submissions for the Online Journalism Awards open next week! We’re always working to improve the awards to continue honoring the best of digital journalism. This year’s updates reflect feedback from past applicants and emerging trends in the industry. As you prepare for the call for entries, take time to review the changes to categories and submission rules.

Last call for Challenge Fund grants

The Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education supports teams of educators, students, news professionals and technologists to collaborate on experiments in local news coverage. We will award grants of up to $35,000 to innovative projects that align with this year’s themes: community engagement and civic participation, diversity, technology and building trust. Apply by Thursday, May 3 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Daniel Sieberg keynotes ONA Insights

Civil’s Daniel Sieberg will deliver the closing keynote on business models based on blockchain for sustainable journalism at ONA Insights on May 11. The daylong event will convene industry leaders to tackle digital revenue and audience engagement. Other featured speakers include Elisabeth Goodridge, Editorial Director, The New York Times; Christian Oliver, Sr. Director Audience Development, CNN Digital, and Ariel Burkett, Manager, Member Experiences, The Globe and Mail. Free training with ONA Rocky Mountain

The ONA Rocky Mountain group is hosting a half-day digital journalism workshop on May 18 at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Training will feature topics such as revenue, entrepreneurial journalism, newsletters and verification tools. Not in the Boulder area? Join ONA Local on Meetup to learn about upcoming events near you.

Apply to ASNE’s free news leadership training

Apply by June 1 to attend the Emerging Leaders Institute, prior to #NAHJ18 in Miami. This free training, which provides travel reimbursements of $400, is open to mid-level news managers with diverse backgrounds seeking to develop core leadership and strategic skills.
