Online Journalism Awards Coordinator (Consultant)

The Online News Association, the world’s largest membership organization of digital journalists, is looking for a tech-savvy, highly organized consultant to coordinate our high-profile annual awards program. You’ll work closely with staff to manage the application, review and selection process for the Online Journalism Awards (OJA), the premier global awards honoring the best of digital journalism.

ONA, with its small, dynamic staff and Board of Directors comprised of game-changing digital journalists, is leading the way for media in the digital age, and prides itself on innovation, collaboration and quick response to member needs. ONA places special emphasis on OJA entries that demonstrate mastery of the unique characteristics and emerging technology of digital journalism. You’ll work with a small but mighty team passionate about innovating and advancing digital journalism.

Overview

This is a consultant role, with the majority of work occurring from March through October. ONA is headquartered in Washington DC, and most work will be virtual. Applicants must be available to attend the ONA16 conference in Denver, Sept. 14-16, where the OJAs will be awarded. (There is potential for growth in this role within the organization.)

Overall Requirements

  • At least three years’ management of high-profile awards in a nonprofit or for-profit setting
  • Strong experience working with award management platforms, data and Excel
  • High level of individual initiative required, including ability to work with limited supervision, resolve practical problems independently, multitask and prioritize activities
  • Strong familiarity with social media
  • Experience with WordPress
  • Collaborative attitude, ability to be flexible in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse range of entrants
  • Professional, personable presence
  • Journalism experience, or experience working with journalists a definite plus
  • Events experience a plus

Responsibilities

  • Work with Awards chair and committee to coordinate the Online Journalism Awards, including criteria, online application, promotional materials, judging process, entrant communication and database management
  • Work with staff to create communications campaigns around awards and contribute information for ONA’s website and social networks
  • Answer emails and calls from potential entrants about process, fees and eligibility
  • Set up and create awards platform database and screener review process
  • Assist Awards Chair in recruiting award screeners and judges; regularly communicate with screeners and judges throughout the process, including schedules and reminders
  • Coordinate online logistics for final judging
  • Regularly communicate with finalists to provide details about the Online Journalism Awards Banquet, including attendance and trophy delivery
  • Work with staff to coordinate winner trophies and finalist certificates
  • Work with event manager on Awards dinner logistics, seating and program
  • Assist with creating and editing Awards banquet script
