ONA names new legal counsel

ONA is committed to tracking and shaping policy and legal issues that impact the digital journalism community. We’re happy to announce our new outside general counsel, Davis Wright Tremaine, experts in media law, who will help us take an even stronger role in advocating for journalists worldwide.

Advocating for access to court records

ONA joined Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP), the ACLU of New Jersey and the New Jersey Press Association in a brief to the New Jersey Supreme Court in a case involving access to law enforcement records relating to the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man by police last September. Our brief emphasizes the importance of access to these types of records generally. We also address the Appellate Division’s conclusion that an agency can discharge its disclosure obligations under OPRA by issuing a press release in lieu of releasing records. Read more.
