The Online News Association will host a full day of digital journalism training and workshops at the Tivoli Student Center on the Auraria Campus in Denver on June 23, 2011. Our community partners include: The Colorado Pro Chapter of SPJ, the student SPJ chapter at Auraria Campus, Colorado Public News, and Kapost.

Registration is $5 to cover the cost of lunch. Details on programming are available below.

As more and more users turn to mobile devices for news and information, journalists should be including the platform in their news gathering and delivery. But how? This session will take a big-picture look at trends in the mobile industry, the differences between mobile and the web, the significance of having a mobile presence and the best tools to use in the mobile space.

Baerresen Ballroom (Tivoli 320 ABC): Dive Into Data: Take a Project from Spreadsheet to Interactive Map
As journalists, we know it’s important to prop up our stories with cold, hard facts — numbers and statistics are essential. And this type of information lends itself well to creating engaging interactive visualizations that allow readers to focus on parts of the story that matter most to them and to make their own discoveries. We’ll walk through how to find datasets, how to extract stories within data and ultimately how to present that data through interactive maps (using Google FusionTables) and sortable tables (using a tool called DataTables). By the end of the afternoon, you’ll have completed a functioning interactive data visualization, and be well on your way to applying these techniques to stories that have deep meaning to your local community.
