The Online News Association (ONA), the world’s largest digital journalism professional association, is ready to identify its next Chief Executive Officer!

ONA’s mission is to inspire and support innovation and excellence in digital journalism. We’re a widely recognized nonprofit institution that connects newsroom decision-makers in the audience, social, product, strategy and business space and trains all types of digital media professionals from around the world. Since its founding, ONA has continually adapted to meet the changing needs of the journalism community. We produce the signature Online News Association Conference and Online Journalism Awards (OJAs) annually, and deliver year-round training, networking, fellowship opportunities and practical tools and resources that propel the work of journalism professionals in the US and globally.

Now in its third decade, ONA continues its evolution as a professionally mature organization that delivers industry-wide impact. As we look ahead, we are seeking a visionary CEO who can build on our successes and challenge us to keep ONA ahead of the curve for supporting and inspiring digital journalists.

Requirements for the next CEO:

  • Visionary leadership; expertise in the broad landscape of digital news and product, an individual who is passionate about journalism and its role in democracy.
  • Proven strategic and team management skills, honed in journalism-adjacent nonprofit organizations or through experience in the media industry itself.
  • A forward-leaning perspective on how digital media models and the practice of journalism are evolving. An ability to discern and act on industry signals and trends.
  • Adaptable and innovative; able to envision new ways of engaging members as workplace, travel and convening patterns affect post-pandemic behaviors.
  • The experience and confidence required to be a compelling spokesperson on behalf of ONA with the press, members, partners, funders and peer media organizations.
  • An entrepreneurial, communicative and collaborative management style.
  • An ardent diversity, equity and inclusion champion with proven results.
  • Orientation towards measurable impact; results-driven.
  • A minimum of 10-15 years relevant experience that includes management of teams.

Key Responsibilities:
The CEO reports to ONA’s Board of Directors and is accountable for the overall management, revenue, P&L, growth and impact of ONA. Those responsibilities include:

  • Organizational Leadership: Direct a talented team of 12 full-time professionals and 10-15 part-time consultants who produce the ONA Conference and OJAs, as well as year-round training and development programs, fellowships, networking platforms, information resources and virtual and in-person events.
  • Strategy and General Management: Partner with the Board on strategic planning, partnerships, member growth strategies, funding and financial management. Be a catalyst for developing and implementing new initiatives that align with ONA and stakeholder goals.
  • Fundraising and Revenue: Play an active, high-level role in fundraising and partnership efforts. Work with key staff and foundations, nonprofit donors and corporate sponsors to develop funding that supports ONA operations and specific programs.
  • Communication and Public Engagement: Represent ONA as a spokesperson at key forums and events. Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Culture and Outreach: Support and champion ONA’s robust diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in all facets of its hiring, culture, programming and industry activities.

Location: Our headquarters are based in Washington, D.C. with a sizeable remote staff. Candidates who live in or are open to relocation or regular travel to the D.C. metro are preferred.
