Mixed reality meets journalism

Our next event is for XR professionals in journalism and other people curious about experimenting with XR technologies for news. Join us online for the ONA XR Community Meetup on Dec. 9, 2–3:30 p.m. EST (19:00–20:30 UTC). The meetup will be an energetic gathering with facilitated networking and idea-sharing. It’s a participatory event, not a webinar, so come ready to contribute ideas alongside peers, new mentors and potential collaborators. Register now for the XR meetup.

Plus: We’re always on the lookout for helpful resources. If you have inspiring examples of XR in journalism or a recent guide that’s informing your work, reply directly to this email. We can share with the community in a future issue of this newsletter.

Project Veritas v. New York Times Company

On Nov. 22, ONA joined 50 other journalism organizations in an amicus brief arguing against the prior restraint imposed by the New York court against The New York Times at the behest of Project Veritas. The position argues that the restrictions on publication and newsgathering violate the First Amendment and would greatly harm journalists’ ability to do their job—reporting newsworthy information in the public interest. Organizations joining this filing, led by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, include The Associated Press, New England First Amendment Coalition, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Society of Environmental Journalists. Apply by Nov. 30 to join the Women’s Leadership Accelerator

ONA’s Women’s Leadership Accelerator is a yearlong, tuition-free program that supercharges the leadership skills of women in digital journalism. Through in-person and virtual workshops, women in the cohort enjoy many opportunities to expand their skills, receive one-on-one mentoring with industry leaders and nurture a career-long support system alongside their peers.

We are looking for 26 women to join the 2022 program, and there’s just under one week left to apply. Learn more and submit an application by Tuesday, Nov. 30, or forward this opportunity to a peer who should join the cohort.

Replay: Leadership conversations with women in journalism

A few of you have asked and the answer is yes! Recordings are available for the three learning sessions in this year’s Women’s Leadership Accelerator speaker series, part of our work to bring inspiring, high-quality training to more women in journalism and other leaders motivated to support the women on their teams.

The three sessions explore strategies and opportunities to advocate for yourself, your ideas and your team. Attendees have described the conversations as a “really great experience” and “outstanding.” Name your own price to register for access to one session or the full series:
