NYtimes.com snags three ONA awards

NYTimes.com took three Online News Association Awards at the organization’s sixth annual celebration of the best in online journalism. The site won in the categories of general excellence, breaking news and outstanding use of multiple media for large sites.

“As we good as we are we must continue to get better, all of us. We’ve got to get there before Yahoo! And before Google gets there,” quipped Len Apcar, editor-in-chief of NYTimes.com

NewWest.net received two awards: enterprise and general excellence for small sites. NewWest, a news site devoted to covering the Rocky Mountain West, has been in existence for only eight months.

The "large," "medium" and "small" designations were based on the number of unique visitors per month.

General Excellence, large sites: The New York Times.

General Excellence, medium sites: SpokesmanReview.com.

General Excellence, small sites: New West .

Breaking News, small sites: Palm Springs Desert Sun, "McGowan Family Tragedy."

Online Commentary, large sites: Seth Stevenson, Slate.com, "Ad Report Card." Special recognition: Mickey Kaus, Slate.com, "Kausfiles."

Online commentary, medium sites: Joel Mathis, Lawrence.com.

Online commentary, small sites: Arthur O’Donnell, Energy Pulse, "The Business Electric."

Outstanding Use of Multiple Media, large sites: The New York Times, "Class Matters."

Outstanding Use of Multiple Media, small sites (tie): Boulder Daily Camera, "Mission to Mante," and Poughkeepsie Journal, "State of the Hudson."

Specialty Journalism, large sites: Chronicle of Higher Education.

Specialty Journalism, small sites: News@Nature.com.

Service Journalism, large sites: Journal News, "Your Right to Know."

Service Journalism, small sites: Winston-Salem Journal, "Unsafe Haven, The Crisis in Home Health Care."

Enterprise Journalism, large sites: Slate.com, "What is Torture?"

Enterprise Journalism, small sites: New West, "Sex, Money and Meth Addiction."

Student Journalism: University of North Carolina, "Global Messengers."
