| Montgomery’s one-year term will start Jan. 1, 2010, when she will succeed long-time board member Jonathan Dube, Vice President of ABCNews.com.
"We’re delighted to have Christine leading the board into our next decade of growth,” Dube said. "Her experience, skills and record of innovation make her the ideal journalist to guide the largest and fastest-growing organization of digital media during this pivotal time.”
Montgomery joined Public Broadcasting Service in August as the organization’s first managing editor of PBS.org, where she’ll develop digital content strategies aimed at growing audiences, and serve the online needs of more than 350 PBS stations nationwide. For six years prior, she led editorial, strategy and site development for the St. Petersburg Times’ digital properties. Under her leadership, the Times was recognized with the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting, given to the Times staff for Politifact.com, a website that tests the validity of political statements. She made the transition from print to web in 1999, when she became a deputy managing editor for USATODAY.com. She holds a journalism degree from the University of Florida, and a Master’s in writing from Johns Hopkins University.
At the Dec. 3 meeting, the Board also elected Jim Brady, President of Digital Strategy of Allbritton Communications, as Vice President/Treasurer, and Cory Haik, Associate Managing Editor of seattletimes.com, as Secretary. Former Vice President/Treasurer Neil Budde, President of DailyMe.com, will take on a new role, Development Officer, responsible for coordinating ONA’s major gifts initiatives.
Leaving the board in January is Denise Polverine, Editor-in-Chief of Cleveland.com, who served as board Secretary the past four years. Outgoing board members also include Thomas Brew, Deputy Editor of Distribution for MSNBC.com, and Ju-Don Marshall Roberts, Senior Vice President and Executive Editor of Beliefnet.com.
The board also agreed to amend the ONA bylaws to formalize a leadership ladder, under which the vice president of ONA will be the presumptive president-elect, and to provide that only professional members may serve as president or vice president.
To better serve and represent ONA’s growing global membership, the Board also approved plans to reorganize the International Committee. Board member Katie King, who previously served as the International Committee Chair, is now the committee’s Board Liaison. Five new sub-committee chairs will represent pilot countries, including Kirk LaPointe, Managing Editor, The Vancouver Sun, Canada; Kathryn Corrick, Digital Media Consultant, United Kingdom; Mario Tedeschini Lalli, Editor, R&D Digital Editorial Content, Elemedia – Kataweb, Italy; Eric Scherer, Director of Strategic Planning, Agence-France Presse, France, and Angela Pimenta, Brasilia Bureau Chief, Editora Abril/EXAME Magazine, Brazil.
The Online News Association is the world's largest association of online journalists. ONA's mission is to inspire innovation and excellence among journalists to better serve the public. The membership includes news writers, producers, designers, editors, bloggers, technologists, photographers and others who produce news for the Internet or other digital delivery systems, as well as academic members and others interested in the development of online journalism.
