On Tuesday, June 30th,the DC ONA meetup group gathered in a bar (go figure) to learn about the best sites and solutions for covering and digging into the new trend of government transparency. There were great presentations from washingtonpost.com's Amanda Zamora and Phase2 Technology's Jeff Walpole.

Amanda showed us a myriad of sources to look for data including: Sunlight Foundation, Data.gov and USASpending.gov. Amanda also talked about news sites who are ahead of the curve offering data and API's like NPR and The New York Times.

Jeff talked about using the technology to uncover important trends and information and pointed out some of the holes in the data provided. He went on to talk about the data from a technologists point of view and how journalists and developers could work together to form a powerful partnership to think about and examine this data. Jeff also gave some needed primers on cutting edge technology and how it is being used in regard to this.

Join us on July 21st for the next meetup (more details to come). We'll be bringing in some local computer scientists to answer all your questions about trends they're watching that could be of interest to folks in the news business.
