During the last few days, we’ve received requests to extend the deadline. We're responding with an eight-day extension. Entry publication dates remain the same, between June 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. Screening will now begin on July 13 instead of July 6.
So, now that you have more time, here is what you need to know to enter the OJAs and make the process go more smoothly:
General Excellence in Online Journalism, Non-English
The Gannett Foundation Award for Technical Innovation in the Service of Digital Journalism
Breaking News
Specialty Site Journalism
Investigative Journalism
Multimedia Feature Presentation
Online Topical Reporting/Blogging
Online Commentary/Blogging
Community Collaboration Award
Outstanding Use of Digital Technologies
Online Video Journalism
Student Journalism
Entry fees are $100 per entry/per category for ONA members; $175 for non-members. Fees for students and sole practitioners are $50 per entry/per category for members; $125 for non-members. Please read the definition of student and sole practitioner work in our Terms of Entry and Contest Rules.
Non-English categories have special submission instructions. Please read them carefully.
The submission process includes: monthly unique visitors, project URLs, a citation field for the award credit and a remarks field. The remarks field accepts up to 18,000 characters (~3,000 words), but you don't have to use all of it! Use what you need to explain to the judges why your entry merits consideration or, in the case of non-English entries, to submit the required information.
A media outlet may enter multiple projects in multiple categories.
Specialty Site Journalism is open to niche sites that cannot be a sub-section of a larger site. If nichesite.com is owned by or branded with biggersite.com, but resides on its own URL, it is eligible. But if nichesite.com resolves to biggersite.com/nichsite, it is not eligible.
If you are not an ONA member, you can become one at Journalists.org. Once your membership is approved, please allow at least 30 minutes for your login credentials to sync with the awards site.
If you’re wondering if you are an ONA member, try logging on to Journalists.org using your e-mail address as your username then resetting your password. If you’re unable to access the member site, please sign up as a new member.

Launched in May 2000, the OJAs are administered by the Online News Association, in partnership with the University of Miami’s School of Communication. This year’s honorees will be announced on Oct. 3, the final night of ONA09, the Online News Association Conference and Awards Banquet, held Oct. 1-3 in San Francisco.
