UPDATE: Screener applications are no longer being accepted.
Do you want to have a say in choosing the best in online journalism? The Online News Association and our academic partner, the University of Miami's School of Communication, needs your help to screen entries for the 2009 Online Journalism Awards, the only contest dedicated exclusively to recognizing excellence in digital journalism. Your participation and quick action could earn you a free registration to ONA09, the ONA Conference and Awards Banquet, Oct. 1-3, in San Francisco.
If you haven’t been a screener before, we encourage you to discover the best in online journalism as you provide an invaluable initial assessment for the final judges by grading entries from across the country on quality of journalism, interactivity and community tools, creative use of medium, and design and navigation. If you’re a former screener, please consider signing up again and recruiting a colleague to join this effort.
Screeners need not be ONA members, but do need to be a part of the online journalism industry — an academic, a Web producer, current or former journalist, programmer, professional consultant or freelancer.
If you are interested in screening sites in the non-English language awards categories, please e-mail Awards Committee member Eric Scherer (eric.scherer@afp.com) and International Chair Katie King (kking@journalists.org). Each award submission includes a saummary of the site in English, so language isn’t a barrier for your work as a screener. Once you express your interest, Eric and Katie will follow up with additional information. Please do not submit your name via the link below. If you have already contacted Eric and Katie, you will be receiving instructions from them shortly.
Screening begins July 6 and must be completed by Aug. 2. Screeners often take a few hours over several days to complete their work. You’ll be guided through the process with the help of an easy-to-use Web-based tool that allows you to log on anywhere you have an Internet connection.
As a thank-you to screeners who step up and complete their assignments by July 19, we are offering an incentive: Your name will go into a digital hat to make you eligible for one of five free registrations to this year’s ONA conference, Oct. 1-3, in San Francisco.
