(Edited from ONA International Committee member Mario Tedechini Lalli's blog post in the International discussion group ...)
The first ONA meet up in Italy, held on the fringe of the International Journalism Festival on April 2 in Perugia, exceeded expectations. About 40 people attended, with wine and cheese provided by the festival organization (our thanks to Arianna and Chris, who invented the whole festival three years ago and manage it in a superb way).
The idea was just to let journalists know that ONA exists, and maybe launch an initiative in Italy to let online journalists talk shop among themselves (we seem to hop from one conference or unconference to the other either explaining "online" to journalists, or "journalism" to online people...). Eric Ulken, formerly with the Los Angeles Times, helped with a short presentation about non-story centered journalism (thanks Eric: people in the audience said that it was "a breath of fresh air").
We hope to organize another gathering in the next few months. Meanwhile we advertised the General Excellence, non-English category of the Online Journalism Awards, and hope to get at least a couple of applications. A couple more Italians signed up as members, which means that the Italian ONA membership increased by 50 percent in a matter of days!
Italian readers may want to check the relevant post on my blog (do not try the laughable automatic translation by Google, the headlins means: "To meet among online journalists: first step"). Others may want to check some photos, by Matteo Marini (the last, awful two pictures taken with a mobile are mine).
