The 2009 deadline of a long-running column-writing contest, now open to bloggers, is less than a week away.

The deadline for the annual contest of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists is Sunday, March 15.

Five of the seven categories are longstanding: humor and general-interest columns published in newspapers with either greater or less than 100,000 circulation. The fifth is the Herb Caen Prize, for the items or "dot-dot-dot" columns similar to those of the late San Francisco scribe.

This year the society has broadened the online column category to pieces published on any Web site, not just those of newspapers. Blogs have been added for the seventh category. Sample columns must have been published or posted in 2008.

Rules and the entry form can be downloaded at www.columnists.com.

"We're looking forward to seeing a great variety of columns from across the country," Bennett said. "Win, place or show, an NSNC certificate has given writers bragging rights and resume points for some three decades."

The column contest for college scholarships ends Friday, March 20.
