Many of Madrid's top digital journalists and bloggers gathered to kick off the first ONA Spain meeting on Oct. 6, hosted at the offices of Soitu.es by ONA member Gumersindo Lafuente, editor of Soitu.es, winner of the 2008 Online Journalism Award for General Excellence in Online Journalism, Non-English, Small Site. ONA International Committee Co-Chairs Paul Brannan, Editor, Emerging Platforms at BBC News, and Katie King, Creative and Development Editor at MSN UK, joined ONA member Rosental Alves in welcoming nearly 25 Spanish digerati. Borja Echevarria, of Soitu.es, and Lydia Aguirre, editor of ELPAIS.com -- winner of the 2008 OJA for General Excellence, Non-English, Large Site -- spoke about their experiences at ONA08. Given that it was Madrid, the group retired to a tapas bar and nibbled and talked into the night. Echevarria has agreed to co-chair ONA Spain and organize more events and trainings in the near future. (Gracias, amigos.)

Among the crowd were Pedro de Alzaga, news editor at ADN.es; Julio Alonso, general director at WeblogsSL. com; Oscar Espiritusanto of periodismociudadano.com; business school professor -- and one of Spain's most-read bloggers -- Enrique Dans of www.enriquedans.com; Álvaro Ibáñez of Microsiervos.com; Ricardo Villa Asensi, head of digital operations for RTVE, Spain's national public broadcaster; Manuel Erice Oronoz, head of internet publishing for ABC.es; Ana Bueno Mezquita, director of multiplatform content for telecinco.es; and Pilar
Portero of Soitu.es.
