Business Development/Sales Manager

The Online News Association, the world’s largest membership organization of digital journalists, has an exciting opportunity for a full-time, tech-minded business development and sales manager to drive revenue and sales for this fast-growing nonprofit (501c3). He or she will assist in managing ONA’s P&L, work with the Executive Director to set sales strategy and drive vendors and sponsors to our conference, redeveloped website and member events. The Business Development Manager is a visionary who can move seamlessly between the profit and nonprofit worlds and bring and form productive partnerships with technical and creative leaders in digital media.

ONA, with its Board of Directors comprised of game-changing digital journalists and small, dynamic staff, is leading the way for media in the digital age, and prides itself on innovation, collaboration and quick response to member needs.

Salary/Commission: Salary negotiable, with generous commission

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • 6-10 years of business development experience, 3-plus direct experience in e-commerce, social media, UGC or rich media advertising industries, managing online services/​businesses
  • Proven track record in closing sales, delivering independent financial, competitive and business analyses; excellent contract negotiation skills
  • Advanced negotiator with demonstrable record of success in and understanding of the online marketing environment and trends (including search, display, social media, mobile, partnerships)
  • Long-term strategic planner; results-driven, superior cross-group collaboration and communication skills and organizational agility
  • Knowledge of and passion for business, technology and the levers that drive hardware, software and services sales for media
  • Experience with site and product launch and implementation
  • Self-driven team player with a positive outlook, and a clear focus on high quality, business profit and accountability. A natural forward planner who critically assesses own performance. Ability to travel.
  • High degree of competency with Internet, G-mail, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. High comfort level with latest social networking tools and mobile communications.
  • B.A/B.S. required
  • Journalism experience desirable, but not required

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Executive Director and staff to execute strategic business plan and help develop and close sponsorships, partnerships, membership packages and other revenue streams
  • Work directly with potential customers and business partners to close sales for the ONA website and annual ONA Conference sponsorships
  • Develop strong relationships with sponsors, vendors and technologists (both member and external)
  • Establish financial modeling: Monthly P&L updates and quarterly forecasting.
  • Track and analyze sales results and drive plans to improve key business metrics
  • Successfully drive key initiatives through collaboration on product and site development and site marketing with Web editor
  • Work with staff on marketing, advertising and promotion planning, including identifying opportunities for journalists.org, the annual ONA Conference and Online Journalism Awards
  • Leverage social networking and customer relationship management tools
