ONA joins in applauding passage of federal shield lawThe Online News Association was part of a coalition of media companies and journalism organizations that publicly commended the passage of the “Free Flow of Information Act of 2009” (H.R. 985) in the House of Representatives. The media shield legislation would protect the public’s right to know by setting reasonable standards for when journalists can be compelled to disclose the identities of their confidential sources in federal court. The 72 members of the media coalition noted the leadership of the bill’s main sponsors – Reps. Rick Boucher (D-VA), Mike Pence (R-IN), John Conyers (D-MI) and Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) – and all the House members on both sides of the aisle who supported the legislation. A similar bill has been introduced in the Senate (S. 448). For more information, visit Journalists.org. Call for entries: Online Journalism AwardsTime to gather your best work for the 2009 Online Journalism Awards (OJAs). This year, along with our new partner, the University of Miami’s School of Communication, we’ve introduced changes to acknowledge the role of technology, the independent digital journalist and community reporting. Six awards now come with a total of $30,000 in prize money, courtesy of the Gannett Foundation and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and the General Excellence in Online Journalism Award has expanded to include micro sites. Winners will be announced on the final night of ONA09, Oct. 1-3 in San Francisco. Applicants are invited to submit their work at Journalistawards.org until June 30. Join the digital evolution at ONA09 If you’re thinking about where to spend your precious conference dollars, make sure to check out ONA09. Registration has sold the past two years, so take advantage of early-bird prices. This year’s line-up includes keynote speakers Ev Williams of Twitter and Lisa Stone of Blogher; a Career Summit and expanded Job Fair and our famous Multimedia Learning Lab, featuring leading-edge, hands-on training. For registration information, visit ONAConference.org. "Watch” the online journalists survey Digital journalists are optimistic about the future of their industry, more so than those working for more traditional media outlets, according to a new survey of select members of ONA produced by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. This optimism also applies to economics. More than 60% say their online units currently are making a profit, and 4 in 10 respondents are “very confident that online news can find a profitable model." Watch the presentation of the survey report, as well as other sessions, from NVision 2009 on March 30 in Washington, D.C., at NewsVision.org.
And in case you haven’t had your survey fix …
Getting metrics on metrics: ONA member Chris Anderson, a doctoral candidate at Columbia University who is the lead research assistant on a project undertaken by Len Downie and Michael Schudson on the future funding models of “newswork,” is conducting research on the work of online journalists and how that work is changing. He’s asked members to help by completing a 22-question survey on web metrics and their use in newsrooms. Chris will have a preliminary survey report available for members in early summer.
Working around the world: ONA member Amy Schmitz Weiss, assistant professor at San Diego State University, is looking for participation in a survey to better understand how journalists operate in their daily work in online newsrooms around the globe. The survey is available in English and in Spanish. Results will be made available to ONA members.
Do the numbers work? ONA member Michelle Seelig, an associate professor in the School ofCommunication at the University of Miami, is conducting a survey on the economic viability of traditional media’s use of theweb as an outlet for news and information.
A global view of digital news Free: The 10th International Symposium on Online Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin School of Journalism on April 17-18. Seats are limited, so please register by 4 p.m. on April 5. Or follow the panels through video streaming from the conference site — no registration is necessary. Presenters and panelists include Paul Steiger, Editor-in-Chief, President and Chief Executive of ProPublica; Andy Carvin, Senior Strategist for Social Media, National Public Radio; Sewell Chan, Bureau Chief of City Room Blog, NYT.com; and María Teresa Ronderos, Editor, Semana.com (Colombia).
Learn how to cover NANO Why should journalists cover nanotechnology? It’s No. 1 on companies’ lists of new research spending, with a market of more than $100 billion per year. The Knight Science Journalism Fellowship program at MIT will host the Kavli Science Journalism Workshop, June 15-18, for reporters, writers, editors or producers with at least three years experience in journalism. The boot camp will teach the basics of the issues, and consider the underlying science and the overarching political and economic factors involved. Those selected will be reimbursed up to $750 of travel expenses, hotel and most meals. Application materials must be received by April 20.
Discount on the Big Easy ONA members enjoy a $345 discount off registration for the 20th Interactive and Media Conference and Trade Show, May 6-7, featuring the 14th annual EPpy Awards.
