ONA Sacramento: Analyzing data with the Sacramento Bee’s Phillip Reese

An ONA Local event, hosted by ONA Sacramento

Award-winning reporter Phillip Reese will introduce you to useful data journalism skills during this FREE ONA Sacramento event presented in partnership with AAJA Sacramento.

Come learn how to use Microsoft Excel to analyze a large amount of data. Please have a version of Excel on your laptop for this hands-on session. A free Excel trial is available at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/try/

The workshop will be followed by a mixer and snacks. You’ll have the opportunity to learn more about ONA Sacramento and AAJA Sacramento and the great services they’re providing to local journalists.

Phillip Reese is a computer-assisted reporting specialist at The Sacramento Bee, where he serves a multi-faceted role: writing stories rich in data analysis; teaming with fellow reporters on database research; and maintaining an online data center that highlights trends in the Sacramento region. Reese and his colleague Cynthia Hubert were 2014 Pulitzer Prize finalists for their probe of a Las Vegas mental hospital that used commercial buses to “dump” more than 1,500 psychiatric patients in 48 states over five years, reporting that brought an end to the practice and the firing of hospital employees. Their work on the story also earned them a 2013 George Polk Award in Journalism.

A native of Marion, N.C., Reese attended North Carolina State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in English in 1999. While in college, he served as editor of the campus newspaper and interned at the Hickory (N.C.) Daily Record, the Wichita Eagle and the Raleigh News & Observer.

Looking forward to seeing you June 5!
