Just The Apps, Ma’am: Pulse

What is it?

An app that organizes tons of information and feeds, and creates a beautiful, storyboard-like exploration of media.

How it works:

After downloading the app (which lives exclusively on mobile devices — no desktop version available), users see a home page and a variety of starter feeds. You can add pages by choosing a “pack” — a premade bundle of feeds — based on topics like business, fashion and politics. You can then search the catalog for more feeds or add one on the pre-selected feeds from top publishers.

What is it?

A mobile app that combs your contact lists and allows you to edit the information on each user, as well as enter information about where you met them, what topics were discussed and notes that allow you to follow up with ease.

How it works:

After downloading the app and going through the obligatory sign-up dance (drop your email, connect all your social networks), you are presented with a multi-function screen that allows you to enhance all the information, draw connections between people and schedule dates to follow up. You can also tag people you want to Skype, grab coffee with and even make introductions, all through the same interface.

What is it?

A web-based curation system that uses your social networks to figure out what your friends/colleagues are discussing and delivers it to you in a daily feed.

How it works:

After signing up for Percolate (currently by request only), users are asked to link their accounts to Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr to receive a composite of their social connections. Each day, Percolate delivers an email digest of articles to your inbox, based on what your contacts are discussing. The clean, user-friendly interface provides a clear list of articles and shared content to peruse. Users can then indicate what they thought of the content (Interesting/Win/Awesome/Fail, or create your own word), “like” the content, add a comment or image and tweet it.

Just the Apps, Ma’am: DocumentCloud

What is it?

It’s a better way to store your documents. It enhances your files, allowing you to search, annotate, store and make notes on different documents, as well as cross referencing them against what you already have in your stash.

How it works:

It runs on Calais, which is essentially a smart tagging system. It improves on the idea of keywords by one important step – it also links important people and ideas, and sorts the information in a way that mimics thinking.
