Minutes approval: July 2009 minutes approved
ONA Conference: Jane said we are currently at 920 room reservations which are well over expectations. The hotel is being very helpful. Jon Dube said that Neil Budde and Jane did a really great job this year cutting costs.
Updates from Jane
“Support a Journalist” campaign: This was very successful, and Jane said she’s hearing from a lot of people that there is real excitement building about the conference. Sherry Skalko said the two recipients of the “Support a Journalist” campaign will be announced next week. These winners will attend the conference for free. The board discussed keeping the campaign going.
Development initiatives update
Foundations: Jane is working on getting support from various foundations and has several meetings lined up. She is also working on getting some funding for starting student clubs.
Challenge Fund: Jane is also working on the challenge fund and holding meetings on this.
Parachute training: Ken Sands and Cory Haik said they are soon discussing the survey results to find out what type of training these journalists most need.
Events: We’ve had a lot of meet-ups and ONA events across the country and in international locations and all have been well-attended. These are becoming more organized and occurring on a regular basis. The board discussed ramping up these events in 2010.
More on ONA09: Programming/panels: Katharine Fong and Liz Lufkin updated the board and both said that we’ll have great programming for the conference. Some new additions include a Saturday panel on “The State of Global Innovation”. Katharine said she needs help in publicizing. The pre-conference workshops have had a lot of interest. We have a great line-up of panels and speakers addressing real needs for the job fair.
Awards: Anthony Moor said there was a two-day awards judging session at the University of Miami. He said we had terrific entrants this year and the judges put in a lot of hard work and had great discussions over the entrants. Anthony said the number of awards we are giving out is beginning to tax the judges so we may want to reevaluate the number of awards we give out next year. Anthony said the University of Miami was a great location and treated us really well.
Board events during the conference: Jane will send out several board meetings/events during the conference.
Board elections: Sherry reported that the voting is starting on time.
Next Board meetings: Sunday, Oct. 4, 9:30 a.m.-noon at Hilton San Francisco and Dec. 3 – 4 at University of Miami
