The meeting was convened at 5 p.m. EDT.
Minutes Approval: Minutes from August approved with modification to say that Jane was hired as the executive director.
Treasurer’s Report: Neil Budde gave August revenue and expense figures.
Conference Report: Tom Regan says he will write a report for the board after the conference to talk about potential improvements including more stable wireless and note that food and beverage costs were higher than expected.
Ju-Don Roberts says 14 companies signed up for the job fair and 120 people.
The board will be working through Jane and Sherry to try and contact other media about writing about our conference.
Challenge Grant/10th Anniversary Campaign: Neil Budde outlined the requirements of the (Challenge Fund for Journalism) Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation, McCormick Foundation, Ford Foundation, Knight challenge grant: The intent of the grant is to help journalistic organizations to develop revenue streams from individuals. Must be finished Aug. 7, 2009.
The board discussed how to set up the discussion and announcement of a 10th anniversary campaign.
Board members are asked to make a donation as well.
Discussing Outstanding Initiatives and a Call for Volunteers:
Jon Dube told the board that Howard Finberg said would be willing to donate Webinar technology. This could be an offering made free to members.
At the membership meeting at the conference, we will discuss:
- Discussion groups and geographies.
- The new web site.
- Student/educator groups – need for members.
- A look at the initiatives we accomplished last year
- Ask the members what they feel the organization can be doing for them in the coming year?
Relationships:
The board discussed various potential relationships/partnerships with other j-organizations. We will finish this discussion at the floow-up board meeting after the conference on Sunday, Sept. 14.
Web Site Presentation:
Sherry Skalko (Editor, ONA/journalists.org) gave a presentation about the new Web site.
