Overview from ONA President, Jon Dube:

Jon updated us on the grant application process for the Knight Foundation. Kinsey Wilson is working on the grant.

Jon suggested that the next in-person board meeting be held on Friday, May 16 in Las Vegas since many of us will already be there for the E & P conference. The board agreed to this.

Jon discussed ONA’s strategic priorities. He is working with committee chairs to define goals for the year. Lori asked committee chairs for their lists of committee members so she can post on the Web site.

ONA Conference: Ju-Don Roberts says planning for the fall conference in Washington DC is underway. She would like the board to think now of whom we want for keynote speakers for this year’s conference.

The board discussed a location for the 2010 conference. Possibilities include going back to DC and Miami. The majority in a survey of members preferred coasts for the conferences.

Committee Updates:

  • Membership: Christine Montgomery said the committee is creating strategic plans for developing diverse membership from other forms of media. Co-chair Teresa Hanafin added that we had a 32 percent increase in membership in 2007. We discussed the need for not only attracting new members, but retaining current members.
  • Awards: Anthony Moor said he continues to have fruitful discussions with the universities interested in partnering with us for the OJA awards. He hopes a final decision will be reached within the next few weeks.

The meeting was adjourned at 11 a.m. ET.

The next board meeting via telephone conference call is set for Friday, February 8 at 10 a.m. ET.
