Online News Association Board of Directors Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 1:07 p.m.

Old Business

The board unanimously approved the minutes for the January Board meeting.

Board Business

Open Seat (Meredith Artley): The Board unanimously voted to approve the appointment of David Smydra, Google, to fill out the remainder of the one-year term of departing board member Jennifer Preston.

President’s Letter (Jane McDonnell): Jane said Meredith’s letter to the membership would be published on the site and sent via email in the coming days.

Administration

Emergency Succession Plan (Jane McDonnell): The plan, approved by the Board at its January Board meeting, has been signed, and officially in place.

Finances, Development and Partnerships

ONA London: Mobile (Jane McDonnell, Irving Washington): Jane said the event is in great shape. Irving says there are more than 100 registrations of 180 available. Steve said there has been tremendous interest in London about this program.

Women’s Leadership Academy (Jane McDonnell): Jane said Trevor Knoblich and herself are part of the committee selecting the 25 women among many applicants. Plans are in place for a sponsored networking reception the first night, sponsored by the Ford Foundation.

News Ethics/UGC (Eric Carvin): Eric, chair of the News Ethics Committee, noted that ONA was interested in signing on to a joint effort with a number of other journalism organizations to establish safety guidelines and protections for journalists and freelancers in conflict zones, an effort led by the Dart Center. The Board agreed to sign on. Jane said Tom Kent is moving ahead with ONA and the DIY Ethics project. Jane also said committee member Fergus Bell approached ONA about continuing work on the UGC Ethics Group in the form of a podcast on UGC ethics and standards.

Digital Leadership Breakfast (Jane McDonnell): The breakfast is scheduled for Los Angeles, and Jane said she and Jess have planned visits to potential partners and sponsors as part of travel to the event.

ONA15

Launches (Irving Washington, Jane McDonnell): Jane said the ONA15 site has launched and hotel registration has opened up as well.
